A poster to highlight the new Common Core Capacities. This one focuses on the Demonstrating Independence capacity, which states:
"Students can, without significant scaffolding, comprehend and evaluate complex texts across a range of types and disciplines, and they can construct effective arguments and convey intricate or multifaceted information. Likewise, students are able independently to discern a speaker’s key points, request clarification, and ask relevant questions. They build on others’ ideas, articulate their own ideas, and confirm they have been understood. Without prompting, they demonstrate command of standard English and acquire and use a wide-ranging vocabulary. More broadly, they become self-directed learners, effectively seeking out and using resources to assist them, including teachers, peers, and print and digital reference materials."
Possible classroom uses:
1. Post on wall throughout the year to refer to and remind students of their goals in all their subjects. Would also bring to the attention of administrators that students are aware of overarching goals.
2. Use one at time and build a wall portfolio around the specific capacity with student projects that demonstrate a particular skill. For instance, use the Perspectives poster to showcase cultural essays or debate topics.
This is a Hi-Res JPEG file that can be printed at 18x24, 16x20, or 8.5x11. Please note: Computers like to automatically put white borders around .jpeg and .pdf files for printing. If you don't want the white border, it can be turned off in the Printing prompt. In addition, you may print this on 11 x 17 and trim the excess off the top and bottom. Any questions, please send a message through TPT.
