This worksheet is designed to meet Common Core Standards RI and RL 8.1, 7.1 and 6.1, but could be used with other grades citing textual evidence to support answers. I designed this to be used by content area teachers working to meet the nonfiction demands of the middle-grade Common Core Standards.
Included is a short sample activity that could use the worksheet. Teachers would need to supply an appropriate nonfiction article appropriate for their curriculum. An online newspaper article would work well.
There is a space on the document to write the question and a concise opinion answer. It then walks students through the steps of citing textual evidence and explaining how this evidence supports their opinion.
This worksheet could also be used as a pre-writing organizational tool or a debate/discussion organizational tool.
