Close reading activity utilizing two primary sources, the Brockdorff-Rantzau letter to Clemenceau and a speech by Adolf Hitler. Both pieces are discussing the horrific effects of the Treaty of Versailles.
This activity has challenging vocabulary already highlighted, definitions for items that student would be unable to define. The lexile levels are in the 1400s and the 1100s for each speech. There are 9 text dependent questions and a writing assignment in which students will need to provide evidence to argue a point and utilize two given quotes. This is entirely an ELA skill which will appear on the PARCC tests.
The questions can easily be moved to a SMARTboard application or overhead transparency for ease in instruction. I have also included an answer key with what, I thought, would be acceptable responses...some variation will occur.
Common Core Objectives:
6-8.RH.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources.
6-8.RH.2 Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
I hope you like it. I am excited to use it in class.
