About the STAR Skills Worksheets:
If you have used any of my Bell Work products in the past, here is the next level up! As a teacher of students for consecutive years, I was searching for a new way to get a quick and constant review each day and here it is with STAR Skills. This product is geared specifically towards 7th and 8th grade students.
Included in this Semester Workbook you will find:
- 18 weeks of STAR skill building sheets + editable Powerpoint slides!
- 18 weeks of colorful, easy to display answer keys
- An instructional guide for students to walk through the first two weeks either as a class or independently
- An in-depth teacher's guide with a scope & sequence, common core standards alignment, teaching suggestions, and grade appropriate lexile information
- Bonus Printables/Posters:
Common Core Lexile Levels
"How To: Vocabulary Squares"
"How To: 3 Part Topic Sentence"
Proofreading Mark Guide
Customizable Proofreading Mark Guide
"Skills and Habits of Close Readers" Student Annotation Guide
Not only will you strengthen your students' core with daily and cyclical Language Arts skill review, but these weekly templates now include close reading passages! This is a great tool to allow students to be repeatedly exposed to standards based skills that may not be the main focus of a classroom unit and to allow their literacy exposure to alternate each week by focusing their answers on a new literature or informational text excerpt.
Help your students to practice and review a wide range of concepts each week by focusing on a one page text from a well-known author, closely reading and annotating a high interest piece, and providing an appropriate lexile level and text complexity that is both challenging and great for class discussions.

About the Assessments:
There are 18 quizzes, complete with answer keys and annotated passages to show where each answer was found. Each quiz has ten questions geared directly to the accompanying passage that explore literary elements, figurative language, finding evidence, citing evidence, context clues, author's purpose, etc. The wording for many of the questions imitates PARCC and PARCC related assessments.
*Alternatively, you may tweak each assessment in the editable Powerpoint file for each quest. Use the passages and assessments in your classroom for weekly close reading practice.
A free practice assessment can be found here: Sample Close Reading Assessments
Note: In my classroom, I refer to them as quests (halfway between a quiz and a test) and note that they help us in our "quest to be better readers."
