These lessons pair texts with universal themes. They help your students meet expectations of Common Core Standards by guiding them through close readings of texts that vary by genre, time period, and author. Then students construct connections between the texts and synthesize their comprehension with essay writing.
The following texts, which are in the Public Domain, are included in the product:
Ain’t I a Woman? by Sojourner Truth, Speech to the Second Virginia Convention by Patrick Henry, The War Prayer by Mark Twain
In order to respect copyright, online links are provided to the following texts (many of these are available in school texts and anthologies): Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou, Naming Myself by Barbara Kingsolver, and My Name by Sandra Cisneros.
The lessons culminate in writing tasks that imitate the style of the PARCC prose constructed response. Furthermore, these lessons incorporate all strands of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) Anchor Standards.
Each Paired Passage lesson includes the following: explicit lesson plan with identified Common Core ELA Anchor Standards, anticipation guide, contextual reading guide and sample annotation passage, sample texts, literature web and poetry graphic organizers, Venn diagrams, literary analysis prompts, rubrics, and answer keys. Detailed responses for all activities and sample essays are provided in the keys, making valuable emergency substitute lesson plans.
This bundle includes 55 pages. If preferred, each paired passage is available separately at the links below:
