This 10 page document describes 8 strategies and 15 routines to help students develop the habit of close, analytical reading that is necessary to meet the Common Core Standards.
The Common Core Standards for ELA stress the need for students to be able to read complex text carefully and independently. The PARCC has stated that two of the standards will be tested on each and every question.
Reading Anchor Standard 1
Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Reading Anchor Standard 10
Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
The strategies and routines included here help students develop the habit of reading complex text closely. In addition, each item is coded to let teachers know how much scaffolding is provided and how much teacher preparation is required.
Scaffolding- 1 (less support, more student independence) 2 (balance of support and independence) 3 (more support, less student independence)
Teacher Preparation- 1 (little teacher prep) 2 (some teacher prep) 3 (a lot to teacher prep)
This document can be used by individual teachers for lesson planning or in a PLC to start out an inquiry into close reading methods, or by Instructional Coaches and Administrators to facilitate professional learning for the entire faculty.
