One activity related to the common core and the PARCC testing relates to discerning vocabulary in context and then reusing that word with the context's definition properly.
The following is four worksheets (designed to be two back-to- copied sheets). The students have to read a sentence, discern the meeting of the underlined word, read multiple sentences and eliminate the sentences that do not use that word with the same meaning, read the homograph with appropriate pronunciation, and understand the same word can have varied meanings and pronunciations.
The words are all homographs so they are words with several meanings/spelled the same. The goal was for fourth graders to use this however I see the value of it as an intro to the activity with third graders and possibly even lower-level learners in fifth grade.
There are four types of activities (no clip art to hint at meanings/distract from the task). Students will be forced to work against the "usual" way of answering context clue questions.
The words are: accent, case, bow, hail, date, jam, fan, soil
