WHAT ARE CRITICAL VERBS?
Researchers found that about 85% of the questions on new tests are based on the language and vocabulary directly taken from the CCS Standards? Sometimes these words are referred to as general academic words. They appear in all sorts of texts: informational texts, technical texts, and literary texts. These verbs can be used across the curriculum including reading, math, writing, and science.
Start teaching these critical verbs and your students will be on their way to a deeper understanding of the CCS Standards. Hint: Teach one word per week.
Some critical thinking words include analyze, demonstrate, evaluate, suggest, infer, research, publish and many more. There are 43 words in all. Each card has the word and definition.
Remember they can be taught and used in all subjects across the curriculum!
These cards are purple, turquoise, lime green, and black with chevron and polka dot designs. They will make a great bulletin board display that can be referred to throughout the entire year, as well as help you create tasks and questions for your students.
