Have you be searching for resources to help your students learn Common Core Critical Verbs?
The CCSS Critical Verbs: Using Common Core High Frequency Words in Literature Response will help your students learn and use the vocabulary they need to succeed with the Common Core and PARCC. These are "The critical words you students must know for the Common Core State Standards!" (Marilee Sprenger). My goal when I designed this product for my 3rd grade students was to highlight the verbs that appear most often in the Common Core standards. Since time is limited during the regular school day, I also wanted to integrate my vocabulary instruction with literature response. This is a resource that can be used in grades 3 through 8.
Each slide includes a verb, it's definition, synonyms, and a sample question or statement using the verb. In the examples, I have used information from two picture books to demonstrate how to respond to literature using these verbs. The books are The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs, by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith and June 29, 1999, by David Wiesner.
The package includes the following materials:
Power Point Presentation (PDF format): (31 slides) 25 critical verb slides and two slides with summaries of the picture books; Sample verbs: assess, distinguish, analyze, delineate, support, infer;
Teacher Notes: (31 pages) Includes smaller pictures of each slide with additional synonyms and suggestions for prompts;
Student Companion: (32 pages) includes journal pages for each verb with definition and places for prompt and response. These sheets can be used with any reading text or novel.
This resource pack is a great way to integrate your Common Core vocabulary instruction into your reading instruction and into your students' reading responses.
