The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Life Lessons." In my progression, this would be week 4, but they do not have to be taught in this order. This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and 4 student activity pages. There is also an additional links to videos and websites if you have access you YouTube, United Streaming or Brainpopjr.com. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.
This week focuses on nonfiction texts about electricity and determining what information comes from the text and what information comes from the photographs or illustrations.
Students will listen to books about electricity and then complete two column charts about what they learn from the text and pictures.
The lesson plan includes focus standards, essential questions, vocabulary, I can statements and technology integrations.
The focus standards are:
RI.1.6. Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.
RI.1.1. Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
The books I used for the lesson are:
• “What is Electricity?” by Lisa Trumbauer
• “My Light” by Molly Bang
• “Watch Out! At Home” by Claire Llewellyn
