Are the Common Core Standards a little tricky to understand? I have rewritten these standards to make it easy for your first graders and their parents to know exactly what is expected of them.
You can use these “I Can” statements to introduce the skills your students will be learning. You may choose to display them as posters around your classroom year-long, or simply display them until they are mastered and then replace them with the new standards you are working on. You can also display them on your WHITEBOARD for the entire class to see. Since these “I Can” statements are color coded and character coded to match the category they are in, you may want to make a “Reading Literature, I Can” wall, “Reading Foundational Skills, I Can” wall, etc. You may print them full size (8 ½ x 11) or print 2 on a sheet to make them half the size. If you print them half-sized, you can display them in a pocket chart.
You will also find a chart that has the detailed Common Core Standards listed and a place to keep track of when each standard is introduced and assessed.
I hope this helps your students understand exactly what they are focusing on in first grade. If you have any questions, please email me, Beth Miller (The Smartie Factory), at firstname.lastname@example.org.
