This packet is geared towards preparing students for the Common Core English Regents exam. The focus of this packet is on, "Should Celebrities Become the Voice of Humanitarian Causes?"
We decided to utilize and review the previously taught strategies related to reading, vocabulary, and writing and incorporate them all in one packet. Some of the mini lessons included in this packet can also be found in our other packets that can be found in our TpT store.
This packet is very focused on the regents topic of Celebrities Becoming the Voice of Humanitarian Causes. We found it helpful to review the previously taught strategies and relate them to regents leveled text that they will find on their upcoming regents exam.
We included sample leveled texts that requires the students to annotate, then use context clues to define unfamiliar vocabulary, and then identify textual evidence that supports their claim or counterclaim for the argumentative essay. As you can tell from all of our packets we really try to break down the bigger task of writing the essay into smaller and more manageable parts for our students.
We also take the opportunity to review how to cite evidence within an essay. We had taught a strategy of using 4R's when focused on paraphrasing information found within a given text. We review that strategy and relate it specifically to this topic and the regents leveled text.
We then quickly review the outline for an argumentative essay so the students are aware of what is expected of them.
In the next part of the packet, we provide the outlines that we have included in our other packets to help the students write their own argumentative essay.
These packets are primarily used in a speech and language therapy room with our high school students. However, English teachers, resource room teachers, special education teachers, and many other teachers can utilize this resource with their students. Again, we like to break down the bigger task into smaller parts so that our students are not overwhelmed by the larger writing assignment.
