Many students need to practice oral reading fluency through sixth grade (or beyond). This chart can be used with any passage the students or teacher choose as an informal assessment of fluency progress. Poetry is great to use, but you can also use any excerpt from reading that you do in class. A student reads the passage to you out loud (you both will need a copy of the passage). You will record the information in the chart. Ideally the student should do it every day, but it can be done once a week, especially if it is in a tutoring session. After five times reading the same passage you should see improvement, or choose an easier passage next time.
