This mini unit addresses how to write a strong introduction in preparation for the body of an essay. This product lists the Common Core Standards for teaching how to write an introduction, student objectives, teacher prep materials, the lesson procedures for two class periods, a focus lesson for students on how to write an introduction, exemplar "hook"/attention grabbers, an activity for students to create their own "hooks" and an activity for students to identify the best introduction. It also includes a link to a YouTube video clip on writing a thesis statement.
Teaching this at the beginning of the year is my recommendation. Since students will be writing all year, they will have the understanding on how to write a good introduction that sets the foundation for the rest of any paper they write.
Students will be able to create a more powerful introduction because of the parts of an introduction is broken down in smaller steps. They also will get to see exemplars to guide them in their own writing. This can be used in isolation as part of an essay you are teaching students to write about including for research. This is product is included my my complete research package that is also available for purchase.
