These worksheets are perfect for content area teachers who need some support teaching students how to read nonfiction. They area also great to use in Language Arts classes! They are work best when a team of teachers all commits to using then students get to see how to apply the featured skills across all subjects. (My team of three teachers used these worksheets all year. Each week we selected a nonfiction focus skill and then we all taught that skill and used the accompanying worksheet in each of our classes. Each quarter we used one worksheet a week so we hit each skill four times this year. It worked great, took the pressure off the Language Arts teacher, and helped students see that nonfiction reading skills apply everywhere!)

This set of 8 pintables gives students the chance to learn about and practice eight nonfiction reading skills. The worksheets are designed to be used separately, but you could certainly incorporate them all into a longer nonfiction novel unit.

The featured skills are:
-Visualizing
-Context Clues CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.4)
-Summarizing (CCSS.ELA- Literacy.RI.6.1)
-Determining Importance (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.2)
-Making Connections (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.2)
-Learning from Pictures (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.7)
-Compare/Contrast (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.9)

Each worksheet features an introduction about the importance of the featured skill, directions, and then a chance for students to practice using the text they just read.

They are perfect to use when the class reads a newspaper article, magazine article, sections out of our content area textbook (science or social studies work best) or with any 1-2 page nonfiction text.
