Informative (expository) compare and contrast writing using mentor texts: This common core informative writing teaches kids to begin to compare and contrast There are 4 prompts and week long activities to go with each prompt. I use this with my second graders and advanced first graders, but it is probably best suited to second and third grade.
The unit includes:
Informative text posters featuring parts of an opinion piece
Four informative compare and contrast prompts comparing:
Basketball and soccer
Fruits and vegetables
First and second grade
Disneyland and Sea World
Each prompt includes:
1 mentor text (modeling comparing and contrasting)
2 pages where kids identify similarities and differences
Color coding page for text structure
Homework cover sheet (if you choose to send for homework)
