Note: This PowerPoint is most effectively used with the mini-lesson for “Lesson 1: Introduction and Expectations for Reading Informational Texts” included in our lesson 3-pack entitled Common Core: Reading Tough Informational Texts Foundations (also available in our TPT Store)
This is a general lesson introducing students to the expectations they should have for themselves when reading informational texts and a brief introduction to first and second-read processes.
Expert readers of informational texts (1) expect to work hard when reading, (2) expect to learn something from reading, and (3) plan to read the text at least twice.
Common Core Rationale:
As students grow as readers, the informational texts they read become longer and more complicated. Students need strategies to help them tackle texts that become more challenging. The foundation for the successful acquisition of tough informational text-tackling strategies is to help students internalize the expectations needed for reading challenging texts.
