UNIT 5: Kindergarten Phonics & Word Recognition: Words With Long Vowels is the fifth unit from a series of five Language Arts Units which is Common Core Aligned and focuses on the common core area of phonological awareness as well as word recognition. This Unit will have your students practicing the recognition of CVC words which contain one long vowel: a, e, i, o, or u.
In this Fifth Unit, there will be a total of twenty Phonics Activity Pages which practice the use of the following long vowels: a, e, i, o, u.
The first part of the Language Arts Activities in Unit 5 will have your students identifying and recognizing words that have a long vowel sound. They will be presented with four words/matching pictures. Three of these words will have a long vowel sound; one will have a short vowel sound! Students will choose the three with long vowels, cut the word/matching picture out, and then glue, tape, or Velcro these on their laminated Farm Mat which is labeled, “Welcome to the Long Vowel (a or e or i or o or u) Word Farm”!
The second part of these Language Arts Activities will provide your students with the farm mat: a picture of a farm scene on which students will glue, tape, or Velcro (if the farm mat is laminated) the three long vowel words/pictures from the previous page. Students may also “illustrate” their Farm Mats by using the paper farm people/farm animals provided at the end of this Unit. Students will cut and paste/Velcro these paper figures onto the Farm Mat as well. Students can also write more long vowel words that fit on that particular Farm Mat too!
Example: Welcome to the Long Vowel (a) Word Farm: students can write more words with the long (a) sound that were not presented already in the given long (a) word activity.
In addition, the answer keys for all ten long vowel word activities in Unit 5 will be provided at the end of this Unit as well as additional long vowel words that could also be used in this Unit.
