Common Core Rationale: One of the first challenges that many students must overcome in making sense of complex texts is to overcome their misconceptions of reading. They must break old, bad habits of reading and establish new ones.
If students have mostly encountered reading assignments that limit reading’s value to acquiring low-level recall knowledge and basic comprehension, student’s reading habits probably amount to little more than scanning the text to find answers to specific questions or attempting to memorize as much of the information in the text as possible. Students need to understand that those habits are not helpful in making sense of texts, making meaning from texts, and thinking deeply about texts.
This set of seven activities helps students build their capacities to achieve the Common Core State Standards for Literacy by establishing regularly used classroom activity structures that provide students rich and meaningful opportunities to practice and refine good reading habits and thinking habits that are conducive toward achieving those competencies. These activity structures lead students to interact with, respond to, think deeply about, and have rich collaborative conversations around texts.
The pack includes seven activity structures that you and your students will love and will become your go-to activities for having students interact with, make sense of, and think deeply about texts during the entire school year. Once established as familiar routines for your class, these activity structures could then be used in as the platform through which students tackle reading work targeted specifically at the Common Core State Standards Literacy Standards for their grade level(s).
Each activity comes with a complete lesson that can be used to teach the structure to students. Each activity also includes suggestions for variations of the structure that can be used to change up the activity as it is used throughout the school year. Finally, each activity comes with suggestions on how to overcome challenges that may arise from student behaviors or practices that prevent them from gaining the benefits of using the structure.
The activity structures included in this pack are:
- Coding the Text
- Two-Column Notes
- Starter, Follow-Up, and High Quality Questions
- Reading Partners
- Paper Discussions
- Collaborative Coding and Annotation
- Differing Perspective Annotations
