Disappointing test scores and complaints from employers have proven that America’s students are unable to read authentic non-fiction independently. The Common Core defines authentic non-fiction as scholarly writing from specialists and researchers about timely topics in Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. In an attempt to turn this around, teachers in all three subjects have been asked to help students learn to successfully read and analyze non-fiction related to their respective content standards.
In addition to Reading, the Literacy standards also include specific Writing tasks that require students to locate and analyze valid research and organize it into thoughtful argumentative and informational papers.
Don’t panic! We have pulled together a handy chart of these Literacy Standards for all three subjects, side-by side to facilitate inter-departmental coordination — Including the English / Language Arts staff! We have also included sample teaching activities for several of the Standards.
We invite you to begin considering how to address these Literacy Standards by meeting in grade-level teams. Examine this chart and consider the sample activities to jump-start your implementation process.
NOTE: We also have similar charts for the Literacy Standards at grades 9-10 and 11-12.
