In our classroom, we use Literature Circles to engage students in meaningful discussions about literature.
We allow students to choose their own reading materials from pre-selected texts covering a range of topics and genres. Often the topics align to content being explored in our class at the time. We have students form small groups (4 students) based on book choice. Our Literature Circle meetings have a regular schedule and only after direct explicit instruction will the discussions become student led. The student led discussions are guided by our Student Journal pages, which each group member must complete, however; students in the groups assume roles or jobs to complete during each group meeting. The teacher serves as a facilitator and sits in on a different group meeting throughout the week. The meeting culminates with students completing self-evaluations.
