Product Description

In these activities students will discover the formulas for area of a parallelogram and area of a triangle.

Included are:

1. Detailed Teacher Notes describing each part of the activity

2. Grids with figures drawn to be copied for students

3. Student Activity Sheets for Two Separate Activities

4. Detailed Answer Keys

5. Two Extension Activities

These activities are great for groups of 2 to 4 students. Each student should have his/her own activity sheet to answer. These include hands-on activities that help students to discover and understand the area formulas of parallelograms and triangles. In the triangle activity, students decompose a rectangle into 2 triangles to compare the areas. Then they must decompose a triangle into 2 right triangles and compose a rectangle and compare the areas.

One extension activity has the student use "b" for the base of a triangle and relate "1/2 b" to the base of a composed rectangle with the same height. Another extension activity has the student decompose a trapezoid into a rectangle and two triangles in order to find the area of the composite figure.

These activities are for the common core standard listed below.

Common Core State Standard:

6th Grade – Geometry – Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

6.G.1 – Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Mathematical Practices:

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

Use appropriate tools strategically.

Attend to precision.
