This article is written for middle school students to learn about unit rates. It is brief (one page), but will give your students experience with a variety of unit rate problems working up to and including complex fractions. This can be used in station rotations or with a whole class. I have included directions and activity sheets for use as a partner reading activity and small group summarizing.

Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. For example, if a person walks 1/2 mile in each 1/4 hour, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction 1/2/1/4 miles per hour, equivalently 2 miles per hour.
