Division of Fractions
(Common Core Math Lesson for Grade 6 – Addresses CCSS.Math.Content.TheNumberSystem.6.NS.1)

Description:

Do you remember when you learned how to divide fractions? Did you understand, at a conceptual level, what was involved in this type of calculation?

Or, did your learning reflect the old adage:
“Yours is not to reason why, just invert and multiply!”

Many of us never developed conceptual understanding of dividing fractions because it isn’t easy. Division of fractions is inherently difficult, much more complex than other fraction operations.

If our own teachers despaired of teaching this difficult concept, they may instead have taught us to “just invert and multiply” as a rote procedure. This left us without any ability to recognize situations that would require dividing fractions in real-life situations.

Today’s mathematics instruction asks us to go deeper than rote procedure. To teach so that our students develop a conceptual base for understanding and applying division of fractions, we must ourselves understand what is happening when we divide fractions. We must also know how to approach instruction systematically.
This product provides teachers with lessons to help their students understand division of fractions. It includes explanations for the teacher along with guided and independent practice worksheets and templates for making additional practice worksheets for those who need more. Students will learn what is involved in dividing fractions as well as what kinds of real-life situations require dividing fractions.

You will get::
• An unpacking of the standard for division of fractions

• An explanation of the confusion points and critical teaching points in dealing with division of fractions

• Guided practice worksheets for guiding students through each systematic step toward understanding

• Independent practice worksheets

• Templates for creating additional worksheets for those requiring more practice

• Sample questions from Common Core Assessments (PARCC and Smarter Balanced)
