How Do Fractions Work On A Number Line?
(Common Core Math Lesson for Grade 3 – Addresses CCSS.Math.Content.Fractions.3.NF.2)
The second standard Common Core Standards in Math for the Third Grade requires that children understand fractions and unit fractions on the number line. For many third graders, this is more confusing than it sounds!
The number line is inherently abstract and confusing for children. Unit fractions are more difficult to identify. Children have a tendency to count the vertical dividing lines as the units and don’t realize that it is the spaces or line segments between the vertical lines that form the unit fractions.
This product provides teachers with a way to bridge area model fraction concepts to the number line, and to practice finding, naming, matching and showing fractions on the number line. Awareness of the unit fraction is emphasized. It employs our hallmark cartoon examples of teaching interactions as demonstrations, along with guided and independent practice worksheets.
You will get:
• An explanation of the confusion points and critical teaching points in dealing with fractions on the number line
• Examples of teaching interactions with child responses (great to share with your students!)
• Guided practice with accompanying worksheets for the students as they follow along
• Independent practice worksheets
This product can stand alone or serve as an extension of our earlier lesson sets
