This set of 56 math writing prompts is aligned to common core standards in 3rd and 4th grade for both math and writing. The prompts are designed to help reinforce essential skills and make real world connections to math while helping students practice their academic language.
Students are given a context for the task, scaffolds to help them interpret the question and reach their answer, and are then asked to use academic language to explain why they used the operations they chose or the process that they used to arrive at their answer.
This was originally designed to help my 4th grade ELLs practice academic language and writing to prepare for the WIDA Access test for ELLs and implementation of Common Core. While it is aligned specifically to 3rd and 4th grade common core, it could be useful with ELL, SpEd, or struggling students up through 6th grade. Please check the preview to ensure that it will work for your students.
Each page is marked with the 3rd or 4th grade standard that it satisfies, unless it is a foundational skill to another standard.
