Description

This set of 22 math writing prompts is aligned to common core standards in 3rd and 4th grade for both math and writing. The prompts are designed to help reinforce essential skills and make real world connections to math while helping students practice their academic language.

Students are given a context for the task, scaffolds to help them interpret the question and reach their answer, and are then asked to use academic language to explain why they used the operations they chose or the process that they used to arrive at their answer.

This was originally designed to help my 4th grade ELLs practice academic language and writing to prepare for the WIDA Access test for ELLs and implementation of Common Core. While it is aligned specifically to 3rd and 4th grade common core, it could be useful with ELL, SpEd, or struggling students up through 6th grade.

Also contains literature connection activities for Math Curse by Jon Scieszka and One Grain of Rice by Demi .

Topics covered include:
-Math in daily life
-Patterns
-Money
-Elapsed Time
-Equations
-Expressions
-Functions
-Line Graphs
-Bar Graphs
-Median, Mode, Range

This is only set 1 and includes 22 prompts! Don't forget to check out Set 2 and Set 3!

Any claims of correlation or alignment to the WIDA ELP Standards are solely those of Tools for Teachers by Laurah J. and have not been evaluated by WIDA.
