PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This Common Core Non-Fiction News Debate centers on the debate over mandatory drug testing for middle and high school students. This unit is entirely differentiated and allows you to customize the activities to meet the needs of your students and is aligned with the Common Core State Standards (RI.6-8.1, W.6-8.1, and W.6-8.5).

The following activities/worksheets are included in this unit:

1. Strong Evidence Bookmarks: These bookmarks contain the criteria for strong textual evidence and guiding questions to help students identify textual evidence.

2. Argumentative Writing Bookmarks: These bookmarks contain the criteria for strong argumentative writing responses and sentence starters to help students strengthen their writing.

3. Warm-Ups: Warm-ups for the first two days of the unit are included.

4. Ticket out the Door Reflections: Ticket out the Doors allow students reflect upon their learning and gives them a chance to ask for additional help.

5. Three Leveled Guided Reading Worksheets: There are three different guided reading worksheets included in this file. They can be used to accommodate individual student needs or set up an intervention if necessary. The three worksheets include a Pro/Con Chart, Identifying and Evaluating Evidence Charts, and Opinion Proof Activity. (Students would not complete each of these worksheets, but you can select the ONE that works bests for your students.)

6. Peel Writing Strategy Poster: This digital anchor chart can be displayed on a whiteboard or printed out to give to students. It helps students remember how to organize their writing.

7. Short Response Writing Activity: This writing activity requires students to write a one paragraph response. This is a great writing activity for students who are struggling to write a good argumentative response.
