Students have trouble starting their research because often times they do not know what is important, cannot focus their ideas and organize their thoughts. This mini unit helps students take notes and organize their essays before they write their first draft. Most students avoid writing an outline and take information directly out of their resources and tend to plagiarize without realizing it. With that in mind, I developed this mini lesson which makes organizing research is simple plan of action prior to writing the body of their essay.
This includes focus lessons on outlining, student practice for creating an outline and for writing body paragraphs from a sample outline, an outline template, steps to taking notes with both good and bad examples, the Common Core Standards for each aspect of this part of the writing process, student objectives, and teacher prep materials and lesson procedures.
After using this product, your students will write a more focused piece of writing and truly be able to express themselves to the reader what their viewpoint is on any topic. This focuses on expository writing but it is applicable to any writing because the concepts are the same.
Best wishes for improved student success in writing!
