Opinion Writing unit: This common core opinion writing teaches kids to read articles (written as mentor texts) and then form an opinion. There are 4 prompts and week long activities to go with each prompt. I use this with my first graders and used it at the beginning of the year for my second graders.
The unit includes:
Opinion text posters featuring parts of an opinion piece
Four opinion prompts:
Do you think cats or dogs make better pets?
Would you rather live near the coast or the desert?
Do you think people should eat healthy foods?
Do you think kids should wear protective gear while skating or using a skateboard?
Each prompt includes:
2 opinion mentor texts (showing both pro/con opinions)
Questions asking kids to identify author's opinion and reasons
Color coding page for text structure
Homework cover sheet (if you choose to send for homework)
