This activity uses only whole numbers, and does not include exponents or negative integers. If you bought my Order of Operations unit, DON'T buy this as well. It is included in the unit.
This activity was created to work on Common Core Standard 5.OA.1: Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Common Core Cluster Write and interpret numerical expressions.
Mathematically proficient students communicate precisely by engaging in discussion about their reasoning using appropriate mathematical language. The terms students should learn to use with increasing precision with this cluster are: parentheses, brackets, braces, numerical expressions.
I found worksheets online that used exponents and negative integers, so were not aligned to the necessary grade 5 skills.
You will have to teach the order of operations and practice. This showdown game is part of my Order of Operations Unit, but sold here separately.
Order of Operations
1. Perform operations within grouping symbols first.
2. Multiply and divide in order from left to right
3. Add and subtract in order from left to right
This activity is intended to use as a practice activity after direct instruction on the order of operations.
Discussion cards are also included for Ten Minute Math activities to encourage class discussions to reinforce mathematical reasoning.
Two levels of showdown and answer keys are included.
One uses all grouping symbols, the other was created to differentiate and only uses parenthesis and brackets.
Have fun! My students really enjoyed this activity and is a common game used by my early finishers.
