Place value is one of the most difficult concepts for my students to understand. Unfortunately it is also one of the most important math concepts that I teach because it lays the foundation for so many other math skills as well. There are many terrific place value practice items out there but my students really were missing the real meaning behind place value. So I created this file that has almost everything that I need to teach my students about place value. This is the unit that I teach right after the number identification and writing number unit. So this is typically taught the 2nd or 3rd week of school. Depending on the skill level of your students this can take 1-3 weeks to teach. Simple lesson plans for 2 weeks are provided.
This file has simple lesson plans for whole group teaching for teaching place value. You will also find a sheet with recommended websites or materials. Not everything in the lesson plans are provided because I use some great items that I have purchased off of TPT. I will however provide the link to the items.
You will also find teaching posters that you can project or print off and display as you are teaching. Behind each poster are some practice worksheets that you can have students complete individually/ with partners or through guided instruction to practice the skill. You will also find a few games or activities that practice some of the skills.
Finally there is a classroom economy using place value that is located at the end o this document.
Hopefully this is a unit that you find useful in laying the ground work for numbers.
