Powers of Ten Exponent Base 10 Scoot & Task Card practice is essential for helping students understand rigorous place value in the upper grades. Understanding our place value system is at times a mind boggling concept for our students, especially once they reach exponents. With Common Core Standards, 5th grade is the first place students are introduced to an exponent.
Common Core Alignment:
5.NBT.A.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right.
5.NBT.A.2 Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
5th graders have to be able to explain patterns in the number of zeros when multiplying a number by powers of ten and they have to use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
