Do you want to help your students comprehend complex, informational text?
Do you want your students to respond to text and have discussions that inspire critical thinking?
Do you want an activity that's simple enough to implement tomorrow?
In my classroom, these reader response bookmarks have done just that. Aligned with Common Core Standards, these four bookmarks explain "jobs" that your students can complete while they read non-fiction text, then discuss with their classmates.
These roles were chosen to teach comprehension strategies. They include: summarizing, visualizing, questioning, and determining word meaning.
Common Core Alignment:
RI.4.2, 4.4, 4.10
R.I. 5.2, 5.4, 5.10
SL 4.1, 4.2, 4.4
SL 5.1, 5.2, 5.4
In my classroom, this has made my students more independent, more aware of their comprehension, and more confident in questioning and challenging their classmates.
