This fantastic Common Core main idea lesson bundle is full of easy-to-use activities and printables! Your students will become experts on reading non-fiction, comprehending the main idea, selecting key details that support the main idea, and making inferences. All the lessons align to the 4th grade common core informational reading standards.
Some of the lessons included are:
MAIN IDEA CEREAL BOX: students get to design and decorate their own cereal boxes, explaining the main idea and 3 key details about an article they read.
MAIN IDEA ANALYSIS HANDOUT: This printable can be reused throughout the year and works well with an article, textbook lesson, or any other non-fiction reading piece. Students will analyze the title, captions, headings, first and last sentence, and other supports to determine the main idea. They'll learn to differentiate key details from the actual main idea.
KEY DETAILS ACTIVITY: Students will determine the key details when they’re given only the title of an article. They must use inferences and critical thinking to create logical key details.
CAPTION CONTEST: Students get to write their own unique captions for a non-fiction article.
MAKING INFERENCES: Using evidence from the text to make inferences and think critically about the reading.
Your students will learn how to close read! They will become detectives of non fiction text, searching for key details, the main idea, and learning how to generate inferential questions. Using the sentence starter activity will promote critical thinking in your classroom to propel their students as they read informational text!
This bundle is complete with over a dozen printables and several fabulous projects and lessons. It also includes extension activities for early finishers. It is designed to work well with both science and social studies textbooks as well as individual articles!
