This “Reading Response Vending Machine” is a great tool to use in helping your students to respond to their texts with strategies aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
This tool can be used for students’ in class responses or for homework with their daily reading at home. There are response questions/tasks for both fiction and non-fiction texts. The fiction text responses are organized into five categories: Character, Setting, Plot, Vocabulary/Craft, and Point of View.
The “Reading Response Vending Machine” includes a total of 25 different responses for the students to choose from. Also included are Monday-Friday response sheets. (In my class, my students complete this with their nightly reading homework Monday-Thursday, so they only use the corresponding sheets for those days and hand them in on Friday)
“Choose a line that uses descriptive language. How does this help you better understand the setting, characters, or plot of the story?”
“What point of view is the story told in (ex: third person limited)? How do you know?”
“Choose a scene from the text and write it from the point of view of a character other than the narrator of the story.”
