PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This Smartboard unit uses the novel The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo to integrate and teach a variety of ELA common core standards within the reading, writing, speaking and listening strands, as noted below. For users of the Daily Cafe management system, Cafe strategies are referenced throughout the unit. Lessons to introduce students to reciprocal teaching strategies, for use in literature circles, are included as well. By the end of the unit, students will be able to:

• make inferences and cite text evidence to support thinking
• use context clues to predict word meanings
• distinguish between first person and third person point of view
• write a chapter summary
• respond to literature through discussion
• respond to literature through writing
• identify theme

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a typical novel study, as it does not contain specific activities for EVERY chapter of the book. It was created with the intention of incorporating and integrating a variety of reading and writing standards and has met that objective quite effectively in daily practice in the classroom. Teacher discretion will be required in determining a teaching focus for some of the chapters, however suggestions are provided.
