Product Description
This student-friendly rubric is designed to strike the perfect balance between using as few words as possible, while still offering robust feedback on each element of each applicable common core standard.

It is based on the argument writing standard (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.1) under the “Text Types and Purposes” heading. The Standards under the “Production and Distribution of Writing” heading have been included because they offer learning targets which are clearly distinct from the “Text Types and Purposes” standards. Conversely, standards under the “Research to Build and Present Knowledge” heading have been left out, because they tend to closely overlap with “Text Types and Purposes” standards. They could fairly easily be assessed using this rubric as is, and have been left out for simplicity’s sake.


Easy to Use
These rubrics are shared as Word documents for easy revisions based on individual classroom needs. Also, labels indicating alignment with the Common Core have been included in the far left column.


Logical Format
Standards are presented as first-person, past-tense declarative statements such as, “I supported claim(s) with clear reasons and relevant evidence.” I have found that using the popular “I can” stem for standards can confuse students. I learned this firsthand the first day I had my students self-assess themselves using a rubric designed around “I can” statements. As I circulated the room, I came to one girl who had quickly identified that she was “Exceeding Expectations” on all standards. I asked hare about a specific standard that she had clearly not demonstrated. She agreed, but countered, “I can. I just didn’t do it on this assignment.” Oops. Good point!
She helped me realize that while I do want to know what my students are able to do, what I have to assess is what students actually demonstrate.
