Not only are speaking and listening skills one fifth of the Common Core standards for ELA, and not only cooperation and collaboration included in the line-up of skills for 21st century education...the tools and skills needed to have and hold intelligent conversations with others is an essential life skill. Every grade level, K-5 includes the speaking and listening standard of "having collaborative conversations about grade level topics and texts...with peers and adults in small and larger groups"...SL.1 also includes a sub-standard to "follow agreed-upon rules for discussion." This poster set includes 6 Rules for Discussion, a rationale for teaching them, 1 rule per page and all rules on one page, and a set of "Speakmarks" for students to keep handy during group discussions. These are the 6 Rules for Discussion I use in my classroom. I'm not so much a fan of the word 'rules' but that is the word used in the Common Core and students learn they must be followed.
