Common Core State Standards Roadmap
Target: Seventh Grade.
When thinking about sharing the Common Core State Standards with my students, I want to use a source that is relevant, showing them where they, as seventh graders, fit on the standard continuum. It is important that they see where they’ve been and where they’re going. I want them to know what they were expected to master in sixth grade, where are they heading in eighth grade, and to understand why the current year’s standards are important to a seventh grade student.
In considering these questions, the idea of showing a three-year span of the CCSS, with the current year as the target, came to mind. If a student can see what was expected and what will be expected, are they more likely to focus on where the current standard fits into their learning? I created Common Core State Standards Roadmap with this thought in mind. Each page includes a clear heading and a standard shown at three grade levels. In my classroom, I project the standard we’re targeting, and then I reveal last year’s standard. We discuss where they are in their mastery. Finally, I reveal next year’s standard, so they can see where our current standard fits in their learning continuum.
My hope is that when we share the CCSS Roadmap students will feel motivated in their educational pursuits. When they ask, “Why do we have to learn this?” and “When will we ever use it?” they’ll see that their current target year is a culmination of past learning, and that the current year’s standards fit in as essential knowledge for the next phase of their educational adventure.
Included you’ll find a six page Table of Contents with the seventh grade standards listed, so it’s easy to find your target standard. There are 37 pages of standards, each with a sixth grade through eighth grade span-perfect for projecting to your class.
