This instructional unit is based on Common Core grades 9-10 illustrative texts that demonstrate the new standards and responds to students' 21st century needs. Students are provided with several texts/strategies/assignments to interpret, summarize, and demonstrate understanding of the unit's essential questions(included).
This unit combines students' reading of literary, informational and media texts based on themes related to identity, culture, and assimilation. Students will be asked to evaluate fiction and nonfiction texts from multiple perspectives and use knowledge from their own lives to address contemporary issues.
I selected a varied range of genres/texts, both in print and nonprint, to represent a spectrum of student identity and culture. At the heart of this unit are the novels: "House on Mango Street" Cisneros and "The Joy Luck Club" Tan. These novels and other texts may be used in their entirety or broken up into parts and excerpts. In particular, these two novels are ideal for that, as the vignettes/chapters work well individually or holistically.
Most of the strategies and ideas needed for this unit are included. For the ones mentioned, but not included, they are easily referenced or you may connect me for questions or assistance.
This unit could easily be adapted for other levels and grades.
