I prepared this packet primarily for fourth and fifth grade test prep for my ESL students, but it is useful throughout the year for a high-interest sports theme, Hispanic American month piece or an anytime biography. Included is the selection with text-dependent multiple choice, short answer, graphic organizer and extended response questions. I also included a glossary for kids to research the bold words in the text. I added a caption and a small map of Puerto Rico as well as text features to note.

NEW: I added a discussion/write opinion page, a core standards page, and a page to help teachers teach ELL students with this product.

The estimated lexile level is 700-799.

Fifth Grade
RI 5.1. Quote accurately from the text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
RI 5.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.
RF 5.4. Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
W 5.2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
W 5.4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task.


Fourth Grade

RI 4.1. Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
RI 4.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology.
RF 4.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
W 4.2. Write informative explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
W. 4.4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Third Grade

RI 3.1. Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as a basis for the answers.
RI 3.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from non-literal language.
RI 3.7. Use information gained from illustrations and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text.
W 3.2. Write informative explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
W 3.4. With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose.
