The new common core standards will require students to relate their written story/essay writing to two-three passages of text. The text may be nonfiction, charts, editorials, quotations, environmental print, fiction, or poetry.
This writing prompt contains four texts for the student to read (short) and specific writing prompt directions. The type of writing the students will be composing will fall under the category "argumentative" because the student will be forced to establish a viewpoint, support/defend it with personal schema, use some persuasive language, examine the alternate viewpoint, and use info from the text in the essay.
I've also included 2 argument writing support pages to help scaffold the writing prompt for lower level students, students who are new to this type of writing, or special needs students.
The reading level of the text is late middle school but the demands of the prompt lend itself to be appropriate for 9th or 10th grade. It could possibly be used with high level eighth grade students to expose them to this type of writing.
The prompt could be used as test prep, a writing assessment, tutor work, text-dependent writing coaching, enrichment, homework, or home schooling assignments.
