Determining the theme of a piece of literature is one of the most difficult skills in reading and language arts. It is also one of the most important and overlooked skills! It is difficult for students to understand that it is not simply just the main idea. To master the skill requires practice, practice, and more practice. I have my students work on this skill regularly in small group and with study buddies. We record our answers in our interactive reading notebooks during private think time and then we share with learning partners or with entire class and reflect and discuss. The cards start with multiple choice cards and build to students finding the theme on their own and discussing evidence to prove that is the correct theme. I did it in this way so that students could see that there are common themes. I also have students list other books that they know of with common themes in hopes to help students make connections. This will be a vital skill for the shift to the common core. Included are 20 TASK CARDS.
