This Common Core Writing Task Paired Passages lesson has students explore themes of love and devotion. In this rigorous lesson, students complete close readings of an O.Henry story, “The Gift of the Magi,” and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem, “How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways.” These texts would be excellent for the winter holidays!
Students complete a handout with before, during, and post-reading strategies, which provides scaffolding for the writing task. Afterwards they respond to a literary analysis writing task that imitates the style of the PARCC prototype.
This is intended as a formative assessment to prepare students who will face the upcoming PARCC assessments or for any students needing practice with literary analysis. This lesson incorporates all strands of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) Standards.
The 26 page product file includes the following:
Explicit lesson plan with identified Common Core Standards, anticipation guide, journal, contextual reading guides, think aloud with sample annotation passage, texts of the poem and story, graphic organizers, Venn diagram, literary analysis prompt, short literary analysis rubric, and key. Detailed responses for all activities and a sample essay are provided in the key.
