This Common Core Writing Task Paired Passage is just in time for Halloween! It engages students with a classic story and poem. In this rigorous lesson, students complete close readings of Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and Lord Brooke Fulke Greville’s poem, “Sonnet 100.” They complete handouts with before, during, and post-reading strategies, which provide scaffolding for the writing task. Afterwards they respond to a literary analysis writing task that imitates the style of the PARCC prototype and asks them to consider universal themes. This lesson provides practice with synthesis writing and literary analysis. Incorporating all strands of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) Anchor Standards, skills stressed include annotation, story and poetry analysis, and synthesis.
The 25 page resource includes the following:
Explicit lesson plan with identified Common Core ELA Anchor Standards, anticipation guide, contextual reading guides, think aloud with sample annotation passage, texts of “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “Sonnet 100” (public domain), graphic organizers, Venn diagram, literary analysis prompt, short literary analysis rubric, and key. Detailed responses for all activities and a sample essay are provided in the key.
