In this lesson, students complete close readings of Thomas Hardy's poem, "The Man He Killed," and Liam O'Flaherty's story, "The Sniper." Then they synthesize their understanding of the readings and write a short literary analysis essay.
To provide scaffolding, they complete handouts with before, during, and post-reading strategies. Afterwards, they respond to a literary analysis writing task that imitates the style of a standardized assessment and asks them to consider universal themes. Incorporating all strands of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) Anchor Standards, skills stressed include annotation, poetry analysis, synthesis, and essay writing.
The 24 page resource includes the following:
-explicit lesson plan with identified Common Core ELA Anchor Standards,
-contextual reading guides
-think aloud with sample annotation passage
-story and poem texts
-analysis graphic organizers
-literary analysis writing prompt
-short literary analysis essay rubric
-key (detailed responses for all activities and a sample essay are provided).
