This Common Core Writing Task Paired Passage engages students with a classic poem and story. In this rigorous lesson, students complete close readings of Thomas Hardy's poem, "The Man He Killed," and Liam O'Flaherty's story, "The Sniper."
They complete handouts with before, during, and post-reading strategies, which provide scaffolding for the writing task. Afterwards they respond to a literary analysis writing task that imitates the style of the PARCC prototype and asks them to consider universal themes. This lesson provides practice with literary analysis writing. Incorporating all strands of the Common Core English Language Arts (ELA) Anchor Standards, skills stressed include annotation, drama and poetry analysis, and synthesis.
The 24 page resource includes the following:
Explicit lesson plan with identified Common Core ELA Anchor Standards, anticipation guide, contextual reading guides, think aloud with sample annotation passage, story and poem texts, graphic organizers, Venn diagram, literary analysis prompt, short literary analysis rubric, and key. Detailed responses for all activities and a sample essay are provided in the key.
