I love the book Freak the Mighty as a read aloud with my sixth graders! It is one of my favorite read alouds of all time. I have searched for a novel study unit that is aligned to the common core, but haven't had luck. So I made one! It covers almost every standard for reading literature (the only thing not addressed is the compare/contrast between genres...since it is just one book!)
Everything else you need is right here. There are opportunities to make inferences, summarize, build a plot mountain, use context clues to determine meaning, analyze word choice, tone and more.
I just completed this unit on Friday, and it kept my readers focused and engaged throughout the unit. I was able to introduce all of the CCSS through mini-lessons in the first two weeks of the read aloud. As we move on through the year, my students will continue to apply the skills taught through this introductory unit.
I aligned it specifically to fit the sixth grade standards, but this novel study could be used in 5-8 grades.
