Do your students struggle with the change unknown type word problems? Mine do too! It is a difficult idea to master. When helping my students, I discovered that scaffolding their understanding was key. Instead of simply presenting the word problem, I offer them also a set of 3 possible equations. They first must decide which equation matches the 'story'. Once that decision is made, they are better able to tackle the task of solving the problem. The equation provides them with a blueprint for solving, while making connections for them between the problem and how to solve it. I used these as warm-ups twice a week. My students met with much success using this technique. Seeing their own names in the word problems is also highly motivation for them, so for that reason I have left this file editable so that you can add in your own darlings before printing. These were made to correlate with 1.OA.1 from the common core, but by adjusting the numbers as well, you can adapt this file to be used with most any grade. Enjoy!
