Robert W. Chambers was a prolific American writer in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. This short Civil War story of his has long been a favorite of mine. It’s very accessible to students and depicts the lives of ordinary soldiers as well as – if not better than – Stephen Crane’s far more famous novella. I’ve provided common core comprehension activities and links to both the story and additional resources for teaching it. Please use “The Pickets” to open discussions about our Civil War and its lingering influences on our national life.
